Rating well-being of animals

Why a product evaluation according to animal welfare criteria by the Swiss Animal Protection SAP?

Most consumers want to assume responsibility for the fate of our farm animals. For this, good information is indispensable in order to be able to make their own choice and thus also to assume co-responsibility.

Furthermore, it is also important to observe, compare and question the promised and actual "animal welfare efforts" in the retail trade and gastronomy. This can only be done fairly and competently if clear animal welfare criteria have been defined according to which judgements are made.

With its Centre of Competence for Farm Animals and the Inspection Service SAP, the Swiss Animal Protection SAP has over 35 years of experience in the professional inspection and assessment of livestock farms, animal transports and slaughterhouses. The same applies to the development of guidelines for better handling of farm animals. With this extensive wealth of experience, he has invested three years in the development of a rating system for assessing food according to animal welfare criteria.

Two communication paths - One assessment basis

Path 1: Comprehensive, demanding, online: essenmitherz.ch

On the Internet platform www.essenmitherz.ch, a large number of products from the retail trade and gastronomy are evaluated and the "animal welfare performance" of various companies is compared.

  • The terms and icons on essenmitherz.ch can only be viewed online
  • They are informative, but are also intended to shake things up and provoke
  • On essenmitherz.ch you will find comparisons between companies in the retail trade and the catering industry for very interested consumers

Path 2: Simple, clear, on the packaging: rating.tierschutz.com

rating.tierschutz.com is used to put the ratings directly on the product packaging in the shop, making it easier for customers to make a purchase decision.

  • The terms and icons can be found on the packaging of the products
  • They are intended to provide factual, concise and clear information
  • The consumer should be able to recognise the message at first glance and receive help for the immediate purchase decision

Evaluation basis

The assessment basis for the ratings is based on 70 to 100 different detailed requirements for each animal category, which are combined into an "overall grade".

The overall grade is marked with "A", "B", "C" and "D". "A" stands for the best, "D" for the worst animal welfare standards.

www.essenmitherz.ch and rating.tierschutz.com are both based on the same evaluation basis and give the same rating for the same product. Only the terms and colours used differ due to the history of their creation and purpose of use:

"A" = "Top" = "Top"

"B" = "good" = "OK"

"C" = "medium" = "Uncool"

"D" = "low" = "NoGo"
